Vanilla Bourbon Cherry Smash

Ingredients
  

  • 6 fresh or frozen cherries pitted
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • ½ ounce vanilla syrup
  • ½ ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 2 –3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional Garnish
  • Cherry on a skewer
  • Lemon peel twist
  • Fresh thyme or rosemary sprig

Instructions
 

  • Add cherries to a rocks glass or cocktail shaker and gently muddle until juices release
  • Pour in lemon juice and vanilla syrup and stir lightly
  • Add bourbon and bitters
  • Add ice and stir well (or shake briefly if using a shaker)
  • Top with additional ice if needed
  • Garnish and serve immediately

Notes

Do not over-muddle the cherries or the drink can become cloudy and bitter
Use a smooth, mid-range bourbon with vanilla or caramel notes for best balance
Adjust vanilla syrup to taste for a drier or sweeter cocktail
Fresh lemon juice is essential; bottled juice will dull the flavor
Frozen cherries work well—thaw slightly before muddling
For a lighter version, top with a splash of club soda
Large ice cubes melt slower and keep the drink balanced longer
